Air-water split heat pump

Air-water split heat pump

Understanding how a heat pump works is the key to understanding how an air-split heat pump works, both with a split system and a monoblock. A split system consists of two separate units: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit contains the evaporator and condenser, while the indoor unit contains the compressor and other components. This configuration allows for greater flexibility in placement, allowing the outdoor unit to be located further away from the indoor unit. Split systems are particularly suitable for situations where space is limited or where the heat source needs to be located away from the main living area. In this article, we will look at an air-to-water heat pump with a split system, its features and differences compared to a monoblock.

Heating and cooling with a split system

The principle of operation of split and monoblock heat pumps is the same. The only difference is in the design solution. Unlike monoblock heat pumps, a split system consists of two separate units: an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit contains the evaporator and compressor, and the indoor unit contains the condenser and other components. This configuration provides more flexibility in placement, allowing the outdoor unit to be located further away from the indoor unit. The split system is particularly suitable for areas with a cold climate, as it does not have the risk of freezing in the event of a power outage during low winter temperatures.

Key features of a split-type air source heat pump:

  • Quick installation: the pre-insulated twin pipes include the electronic bus cable and are very flexible, which ensures simple and quick installation.
  • Limited unit spacing: The charged outdoor unit provides a distance of 15 m to the indoor unit without the need for refrigerant.
  • Designed for temperate climates: during cold periods, there is no frost protection for the circuit between the outdoor and indoor units.

Split or monobloc or heat pumps?

Which heating system should I choose: a split or monoblock air-to-water heat pump? The answer depends on several factors, including the specific needs of your space and climate conditions. Typically, a split system is chosen by those owners who want to heat and cool a specific part of the house (e.g. garage, solarium, extension, etc.) or a room with a small area. Split systems are usually more cost-effective and quicker to install than monoblocks. However, monoblock systems, in turn, provide more freedom in choosing a place for installation. For a more detailed description of the features of an air-source monoblock heat pump, see the article "Monobloc air source heat pump".
